The Bucyrus, Ohio Bratwurst Festival was last weekend and we didn’t go…
I haven’t gone since my last class reunion in 2019.
But nonetheless, thinking about the fest made me a bit homesick.
Home reminds me of family dinners around the table…
My mom was a great cook
(grandma was better, but that’s to be expected through the eyes of a child)
However, mom didn’t make anything that didn’t pass muster with my daddy’s palate – he was a meat and potatoes man.
Mom told a story of early in their marriage when she cooked a dinner that dad didn’t care for. Apparently, he got up from the table without saying a word and went downtown to get something to eat.
Mom was crushed.
From then on, we never ate anything daddy didn’t care for unless he was working second shift.
I remember mom asking daddy once if he liked his dinner and his response was, “Well I ate it, didn’t I?”
If dad ate it, he liked it.
He was a man of few words.
Tonight I made mom’s Red Hamburgers for dinner.
My sister Dana’s birthday meal favorite, daddy ate them and so did Bill!
For me, one taste tonight took me back home…

Especially since they were cooked and served with my mom’s favorite spatula!
The recipe is simple if you want to try something different. I went easy on the onions to (hopefully) avoid heartburn.

Red Hamburgers
Fry 8-10 Hamburgers
Cover with:
1 C Catsup
2 Tbsp Vinegar
2 Tbsp Worcestershire
4 Tbsp Sugar
Pinch of Salt
2 medium onions chopped
Bake at 350° 45 minutes
I had a pic of Bill eating, but didn’t want to be in the doghouse…
Enjoy!

Delicious! There is something tasty to the palette when a family recipe returns to the dinner table. My wife enjoys making and sharing her mother’s famous Pineapple Fluff.

No “California” with cheese sauce or pumpkin pie, but definitely had Dana and mom on my mind! ❤️💔

Bratwurst festival! Yee-haw! Sorry. Had to get that out of my system. The red hamburgers sound interesting. My dad used to make raw beef and onions on New Year’s and eat it on rye bread.

Raw beef and onions? Was it served raw? I can get behind rye bread any day of the week!

Yes it was. I think the raw hamburger is a Wisconsin thing or a German thing or a combination. A bar we used to go to bc would have a large platter of it out on New Years. Steak Tartare.
