Moving Forward Unapologetically Real

Question of the day:

I am an empath.

It’s really no secret.

It makes me a good listener.

To the extent that people seem to tell me things about themselves that I really do not want to know.

I am also good at keeping confidences, secrets. I am a keeper of many secrets.

With one exception: Christmas (and sometimes birthday) gifts. I just can’t contain my excitement when I manage to find just the right gift for someone. I’m like a little child!

But back to listening…

Listening, truly listening is becoming a lost art. In my (not so) humble opinion.

Often, when I talk to people on the phone they will ask “Are you still there?” to which I reply, “Yes, just listening.”

Usually, it takes a bit of thought for me to formulate a response. I despise being wrong. So it might be two or three subjects down the road before I meander back with an answer to a question posed earlier.

Why would one take the time to talk without the intent to listen, truly listen to what the other person has to say?

My answer to that question is, I don’t know.

Perhaps that is what text messages are designed for…

It is quite maddening, as someone who takes the time to listen during a conversation, to be talking to an individual who is just thinking about what they’re going to say next.

They might as well be talking to themselves.

Which person do you identify with? One who listens to hear, or one who listens merely to respond?

I already have an answer in my head. Ever since I realised I have started pausing to listen and have seen that most of the times I am wrong- I am ready to say something which wasn’t even required to be said!
