What I Have Learned From Being Grateful:

28 May 2020, 323 days ago, I made the conscious decision to wake up in a state of gratitude.
This is my 169th Gratitude musing – not all of the days were noteworthy enough to elicit a post – some days I was just grateful to get out of bed!
What have I learned in the last 323 days of practicing gratitude?
“Being grateful does not mean that everything is necessarily good. It just means that you can accept it as a gift.”
― Roy T. Bennett
Being grateful helped me find peace in my life that was turned upside down, even in the midst of a pandemic.
Peace during a time that ordinarily would have brought fear.
Practicing gratitude helped me look past the ordinary and see that little things could add to happiness. Many little things combined helped my heart heal.
Instead of withdrawing into myself and my pain, I have taken interest in others’.
I have a prayer list.
“If tragedy never entered our lives, we wouldn’t appreciate the magic.”
― Nikki Rowe
I feel better… I can’t explain it…
I take pleasure in things that I might not have noticed before. Hearts in clouds, bird wars at the birdfeeder, purple finches, fat squirrels, playing faces on the messenger app.
“Every time you feel gratitude, you’re reminding your brain to look for more ways to be grateful. As you bask in noticing life’s abundance, your body rewards you with serotonin, oxytocin and dopamine – boosting your immunity and energy.”
― Simona Ondrejkova
I am not suggesting that practicing gratitude is a panacea for grief. However, it is one tool in my toolbox that has worked quite well.
I believe wholeheartedly that a grateful heart is a magnet for miracles.
The fact that my heart has healed to the highest extent possible is truly a miracle. That did not happen until I took my eyes off my pain and started focusing on gratitude.
“Yes, my scars shape me
Today, I have learnt to cover
it with fabric made of hope,
faith, perseverance, and
determination. For this,
I am grateful to life”
― Vijaya Gowrisankar
I am grateful that every event in my life so far has shaped me into the person who I am today.

Awesome post Lisa! I have been writing a daily quick note about something which blessed my day. This has helped me to stay helpful and positive with my mother’s life back in Montana.

So true, Lisa. Having the honor and complete blessing of watching, witnessing and walking with you through this journey, my very 1st thought as I began to read this post was…how your choosing to seek, find and embrace gratitude was a healing salve…applied day by day and sometimes, from moment to moment. It’s a tool that your journey has placed in my toolbox too.💗
