One of the first things that crosses my mind each morning (besides the urge to run to avoid accidental spillage in my undergarments) is, “Thank you G-d, for another day!”

Truth be told, the only thing we are assured of is this second in time.

Each breath is a gift to be gratefully celebrated.

Truthfully, in the days after Larry’s death I wasn’t even grateful for that.

When I started practicing gratitude, breathing was the only thing I could think of

…and that was enough.

Breathing is something we take for granted, especially if not ill.

As a Respiratory Therapist I know this all too well.

Without breath life cannot exist.

But sometimes life makes my breath catch in my throat with an involuntary hold as if to hang on to this moment in time just one second longer to sear it to my memory…

Like my aghast moment when my SO fiancée asked me to marry him,

or kindergarten shopping with my grandlittle

or today when every time I stepped outside at least one hummingbird, sometimes two, came to the feeder,

or the family of geese in the yard,

or that nothing, absolutely nothing happens by accident.

Lessons Learned in Life

Every person we meet

is here

for a reason

a season

or a lesson.

We just have to be discerning enough to recognize which moments are deserving of breath-holds and which people are worthy of holding onto —

and be grateful for each and every one!

  2. Inspiring reminder Lisa! Indeed, each day brings us another precious moment to share gratitude with others. Your post title reminds me of a sign on the desk of one of former teaching colleagues. It simply said, “Keep Breathing! “
